The Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) has announced the lifting of the temporary suspension of sporting activities in the country.

MNCS Executive Director Henry Kamata made the announcement in a statement dated June 18, 2024, expressing his gratitude to the sports community for their solidarity and support during this time of national mourning.

“The Council expresses its deepest gratitude to all sports federations and member organizations for their respectful compliance with the directive to suspend all sports activities following the tragic death of the country’s Vice President, the Very Honourable Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima, and eight officials on 10 June 2024,” the statement said.

The Council has since directed that in resuming sports activities, the fraternity should continue to honour the memory and legacy of the former Vice President and others by embodying the spirit of peace, unity and excellence in sports activities.

MNCS suspended all sporting activities on Wednesday, 12 June 2024, following the death of Dr. Chilima and eight other officials in a tragic plane crash in Chikangawa forest on Monday, 10 June 2024.
