As the thermometer has risen again, the number of Spare the Air warnings has also increased.

On Wednesday, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District added the sixth warning of 2024 to the calendar. A warning already issued for Wednesday was extended until Thursday.

Ozone levels in the lowest layers of the atmosphere are expected to be unhealthy at times for sensitive groups, including the very young and elderly, and those with underlying health conditions, health officials said. Air across the region is expected to be mostly moderately healthy on Thursday and Friday.

The extension of the warning until Thursday comes as the latest heatwave hits the region. It is coming from a high pressure system that caused extremely hot temperatures last week and is now building up again. This heatwave has broken all records since the system first hit the region on July 2.

Temperatures in the hottest areas are expected to be between 40 and 42 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. In other areas not quite as far inland, temperatures will be between 35 and 38 degrees Celsius, according to the weather service. In the hotter areas along the bay coast and on the peninsula, highs will be between 27 and 29 degrees Celsius, and in San Francisco, highs will be as high as 21 degrees Celsius.

The weather service has issued a heat warning that begins at 11 a.m. Wednesday and ends at 8 p.m. Friday. The East Bay Hills and interior valleys, San Jose and the Santa Clara Valley, the Eastern Santa Clara Hills and the interior mountains of the North Bay all fall within the scope of the warning.
