The round of 16 match between Germany and Denmark at the 2024 European Championship in Dortmund was interrupted due to a storm after thunder, lightning and hailstones fell in the first half.

Referee Michael Oliver took the players off the pitch after just over 30 minutes of play and the score at 0-0. “Due to adverse weather conditions, the game was suspended,” it said on screens in the stadium.

The hosts had started as favourites after comfortably strolling through the group stages. Two impressive performances in their first two matches put them one game ahead of qualifying when they faced Switzerland, but the 1-1 draw means coach Julian Nagelsmann will be expecting an inspiring performance.

Denmark’s group stage was far more disappointing. After three draws, they only picked up a measly three points, which was just enough to secure second place in Group C.

On ITV, the pundits discuss the action we’ve seen in the game so far. Ian Wright said: “It looked like a great start from Germany as they put Denmark under pressure.”

“The Danes couldn’t keep the ball and it felt like the disallowed goal was the perfect time for them to score.”

The Danish coaches would also have abandoned the game earlier. Head coach Kasper Hjulmand was an assistant at Wieghorst HC when Jonathan Richter was almost killed by a lightning strike during a reserve game for FC Nordsjaelland.

In the tunnel, referee Michael Oliver is discussing things with other officials and is obviously trying to assess the situation in order to get the game going again.

Water is now pouring into the stadium, which is very reminiscent of the scenes at Old Trafford earlier this year. The fans are wearing raincoats and ponchos.

Well, everyone except two who are running around shirtless and dancing in the makeshift waterfall.
