Police search for MARTA passenger who allegedly beat another man to death in downtown Atlanta – WSB-TV Channel 2

ATLANTA, Ga. — Police are working to identify a man they say beat another man to death in an unprovoked attack in downtown Atlanta.

Channel 2’s Tom Jones was with police Friday in Castleberry Hills as police handed out flyers.

Police say the man confronted Jeylani Mohamed shortly after 3am on June 18 on a staircase at the corner of Ted Turner Drive and Peters Street. The gruesome attack lasted more than eight minutes.

Police are now desperate to identify the man.

“We know he’s transient and he’s very familiar with the public transportation system,” Lt. Andrew Smith said.

Surveillance video captured the suspect after the attack. Police said he frequently used MARTA services and that cameras captured him at the Lakewood, 5 Points, Garnett Street and Sandy Springs stations.

People walking near the scene of the beating said they felt uneasy knowing that a suspected killer was still on the streets.

“I just hope he gets caught and the family gets justice,” one person said.

Police said the man had a large tattoo on the inside of his right arm.
