Investigation of Dolton Mayor Tiffany Henyard continues after board overrides her veto – NBC Chicago

Heated discussions erupted at a town council meeting in the south suburb of Dolton on Monday night when a majority of councilors voted to allow former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot to continue her independent investigation into controversial Dolton Mayor Tiffany Henyard and the use of town funds.

The gathering ended abruptly after shouting broke out, Lightfoot was prevented from speaking, and several people were escorted out by police.

“Many residents are curious about the status of the investigation. Is there any progress? She wanted to give some sort of overview and also ask the mayor of Dolton to cooperate transparently in the investigation,” Trustee Jason House said of Lightfoot.

Before the meeting adjourned, a majority of trustees voted to override a recent veto by Henyard, allowing Lightfoot to continue her investigation into the Dolton mayor.

Accused of wasting money, Henyard was at the center of a series of lawsuits and federal investigations. Before the situation spiraled out of control, residents and trustees also had a lot to say about the mayor and his finances.

“We are being treated like dirt,” said one resident.

“We are fed up with your government,” commented another.

Lightfoot has continued her work on the investigation but has not yet been paid for it. Her investigation is expected to be completed in 60 days.

Following the board vote, Lightfoot issued the following statement through a spokesman:

“I commend the Village of Dolton Board for decisively exercising its authority to override Mayor Henyard’s veto and prevent any attempts to delay an independent investigation into the matters outlined in the resolution. The majority of Trustees remain committed to fulfilling their fiduciary responsibilities regarding financial oversight and advocating for the interests of Dolton residents. They understand that the residents of the Village deserve a transparent and thorough process. I look forward to the work ahead and urge Mayor Henyard and her administration to fully cooperate with this investigation by promptly providing the requested documentation to provide all stakeholders with a complete and accurate representation of the Village’s financial condition.”
