Latest shooting of Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico: Prime Minister in life-threatening condition after assassination attempt

The Slovak Prime Minister was shot and injured in a broad daylight attack

Slovakia’s populist Prime Minister Robert Fico is in life-threatening condition after being shot in the stomach and taken to hospital.

Fico, 59, was reportedly injured after four shots were fired outside the House of Culture in the town of Handlova, where the leader was meeting with supporters.

A witness said he heard several gunshots while images emerged of the suspect, believed to be 71, being arrested by police.

After brief treatment at a local hospital, Fico was flown to Banska Bystrica Hospital, where he was carried on a guerney.

Peter Pellegrini, Slovakia’s elected president and an ally of Mr. Fico, said that “an assassination attempt on the prime minister represents a threat to everything that has adorned Slovak democracy so far.”

Mr. Fico, a known ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, is known for his tirades against journalists. He previously described a major television network, two national newspapers and an online news site as his enemies and said he would not communicate with them.

What are Fico’s policies?

Over the course of his three-decade career, Fico moved between the pro-European mainstream and nationalist positions opposed to EU and US policies. He has also shown a willingness to change course depending on public opinion or changing political realities.

An admirer of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Fico became increasingly critical of Western support for Ukraine in the war against invading Russian forces and expressed opposition to Kiev joining NATO in the future.

Fico was forced to resign as prime minister in 2018 amid mass protests sparked by the contract killing of Jan Kuciak, a journalist who had been investigating high-level corruption.

These protests exacerbated the divisions in Slovak society that still exist.
