Former NSCDC official sentenced to life imprisonment for raping minor

An Ekiti State High Court in Ado-Ekiti has sentenced 39-year-old Olukayode Dayo, a former officer of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), to life imprisonment for the rape of a minor.

Dayo was arraigned before Justice Lekan Olatawura on May 13, 2022, for the rape of a 13-year-old girl on December 25, 2021.

Then-prosecutor Julius Ajibare told the court that the victim had told the police: “I was living with my grandmother and was sent home to fetch bananas and kola nuts. On my way, I was intercepted by a man named Olukayode (defendant) on his motorcycle. He put the banana and kola nuts on my head and took me to an unfinished building. Despite my screaming, he ignored me, took off my underwear and raped me.”

The accused, represented by his lawyer Oluwaseun Oyebanji, denied the charges and asked the court for mitigation, but did not call any witnesses.

In his judgment, Judge Lekan Olatawura found that the victim had consistently and clearly identified the accused, who was well known to her, as the perpetrator.

He stated: “All things considered, I find beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant raped the 13-year-old girl on December 25, 2021, and therefore I find him guilty of the charge. Consequently, the defendant is sentenced to life imprisonment.”
