Save-A-Lot at Broadway Market set to close

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — The Save-A-Lot inside Broadway Market is one of the few grocery store chains on the East Side. It might close soon.

Landlord Ron Horrigan says he’s six months behind on Broadway Market rent and is dealing with widespread shoplifting, confirming a report in The Buffalo News.

Handwritten signs reading “Store Closing” were on the front of the store and many shelves were almost empty. Store employees said they were preparing to take on new jobs.

On Tuesday, shoppers had just heard the news that their store would be closing at the end of the week and they were dismayed.

“It’s bad because now the elderly have nowhere to go,” Kevin Barney told 7 News. “There’s nowhere to shop. Now people who don’t have a vehicle have to break it in or try to get a Jitney or whatever.”

“You know, they’re closing everything in the neighborhood,” Brian Marshall said. “It’s a shame that this is happening to us and everyone is living so big, but people here have been living like this for a minute.”

It may not be a done deal. Horrigan and city officials told 7 News they are scheduled to meet Wednesday.

The state previously announced $38 million to renovate Broadway Market.
