Oklahoma State Cowboys sweep Houston, head to Big 12 Baseball Championship as No. 2 seed | Sports

THE Oklahoma State Cowboys pounded the Cougars Houston in two games last week, concluding their 2024 baseball regular season.

For the eighth time in the last 11 seasons, during the coaching tenure Josh Vacationthe ‘Pokes finished among the top two teams in Big 12 baseball. The Cowboys are ranked No. 17 in the nation.

A three-game slate was planned for Schröder P.ark on the University of Houston campus, but due to stormy weather, a Thursday game was canceled.

Then, organizers decided the best bet for both games to be played was to schedule a doubleheader for Saturday.

In the first game, things were mostly subdued, but Oklahoma State erupted for six points early in the third stanza, and the Cougars followed with two down.

It was almost over for Houston, but OSU was just getting started. The Cowboys put up 1 run in the fifth, ten in the sixth and one more in the eighth.

While the Cougars added just one score in the bottom of the seventh, the game ended under the provisions of the running rule. OSU won 20-3.

After a brief break on each side, in the second game (last of the regular season for each), OSU did not let up. Two runs in the first, three in the second, two each in the fifth and sixth, and one final run at the start of the sixth.

Over the course of the complete nine-inning game, Houston managed two runs. OSU won 9-2.

According to the OSU athletics website, “In their performances against the Cougars, Sam Garcia And Brian Vacation became the seventeenth and eighteenth different pitchers in program history to record 100 strikeouts in a season. The feat has now been accomplished 22 times by a Cowboy pitcher. »

Four of the ‘Pokes had three RBIs each in Game 1: Avery Ortiz, Zach Ehrhard, Nolan Schubart And Tyler Wulfert.

Pitcher Garcia went seven innings, striking out an average of one opposing batter per inning. With this victory, his mark reached 6-3.

In the second game, played as the night grew darker, pitcher Holiday went 8 1/3 innings. He had 14 strikeouts (tying his career high) while scattering six hits and allowing just two outs.

Scubert went 3-for-4 at the plate, dishing out a “wowser” five RBIs, including a home run (his seventeenth this season – leading the team. Carson Benge hit two doubles in the victory.

After a few days off at home, the Cowboys will enter the Big 12 Championship as the No. 2 seed (just behind the OU Sooners).

OSU will play Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

The Cowbooys will face the winner of a play-in match Tuesday between the University of Central Florida And Cincinnati.

The University of Oklahoma will also play on Wednesday, to face either Kansas Or Texas Christian.

THE Texas LonghornsNo. 3 seed in the Big 12 baseball tournament, faces Texas Technology Tuesday. The winner will advance to a match on Wednesday.
