Parliamentary staff suspend two-month strike in Anambra

The Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), Anambra chapter, said it has suspended the indefinite strike it began on March 28.

The Chairman of the association, Mr Abraham Okoye, said on Tuesday in Awka that the decision was taken after government initiated measures to address their demands.

Okoye said part of the measures was to address issues of unpaid special allowances of the staff of the State Assembly of the House of Representatives.

“The Anambra PASAN Board of Directors and the leadership of the South East Zone of PASAN met with the leadership of the State Assembly, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, the Head of Service and a team of permanent secretaries.

“It was decided in the meetings that the leadership of the Assembly would commit to paying the Consolidated Legislative Salary Structure (CONLESS) to the staff.

“A joint committee of the Executive and Assembly should examine the modalities for financial autonomy of the Anambra State House of Representatives and advise the Governor on the same.

“In view of the above developments, PASAN in Anambra State is therefore directed by its national body to suspend the indefinite strike for two months,” Okoye said.

According to Okoye, PASAN will resume the strike if no action is taken by the end of the two-month period.

The indefinite strike was due to the non-implementation of full legislative financial autonomy and the non-payment of the allowances in the state budget that have been recurring since 2019.

The association also protested against the non-constitution of the state Legislative Service Commission under the Anambra Legislative Service Commission Law, 2022.
