Taunton High School crossing guard arrested after alleged assault

TAUNTON – A Taunton Public Schools crossing guard was arrested Monday morning after an alleged physical altercation outside Taunton High School, Taunton Police Chief Ed Walsh said.

School crossing guard Louis Chaves, 68, of Taunton, was arrested around 7:30 a.m. Monday, June 3, following an altercation at Taunton High School involving him and the occupants of a motor vehicle, the police chief said in a written statement late Monday afternoon.

Chaves was arraigned Monday afternoon in Taunton District Court on three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, Walsh said.

“Taunton Public Schools is aware of a physical altercation this morning (June 3) involving a school crossing guard,” the district said in an earlier statement to Taunton Daily Gazette media partner WCVB-TV.

Was the suspect released?

“The school crossing guard has been terminated effective immediately and is no longer an employee of Taunton Public Schools,” the district told WCVB.

Previous concerns about traffic in the area

The Gazette interviewed Chaves in October 2023 for an article about traffic congestion outside Taunton High School and the adjacent Parker Middle School that raised safety concerns among teachers, students and parents.
