A British woman raped while on holiday in Crete claims her father was wrongly accused

A British woman who was raped while on holiday in Crete claims Greek police wrongly charged her father over the attack.

The 33-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, claimed her father was at her hotel at the time of the attack and said her attacker was “allowed to move freely”.

The woman’s father, 62, was arrested on Saturday, two days after his daughter filed a police report.

She told MailOnline: ‘I can tell you 100 per cent he didn’t rape me. I live with my dad in the UK, I went on holiday with him to Greece and he is the best dad in the world. There was no way he would do something so disgusting.

“I told the Greek police this but they just ignore me. This is an incredibly stressful and traumatic situation, but there is hope for us. The judge told us that my father can go free if the DNA test clears him.”

CCTV footage from the bar showed a man making “obscene gestures” towards the woman, then punching her in the face and later attacking her on the beach, police said.

Forensics told local news agency Neakriti that the woman had injuries consistent with rape.

Police said the woman, who said she was drunk at the time, remembered nothing of the attack except that the attacker was dressed all in white.

The man appeared in court in Heraklion on Tuesday and pleaded not guilty to charges of rape, sexual abuse and domestic violence.

He was remanded in custody and his trial is due to take place in the next 18 months.

The man’s daughter vowed to stay with him until his release.

“I’m just going home with him. “My head is a mess right now and I can’t even think straight,” she said.

In her complaint to police, the woman said an unknown man raped her on June 9 on a narrow street near a bar where she was drinking with her father.
