Erie man among two killed in Missouri car crash; three injured

Two people were killed and three others injured in a car crash in Missouri on Monday involving three Erie residents, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

A 16-year-old boy fell asleep at the wheel while driving a Chevrolet Silverado eastbound on U.S. 50 near Warrensburg, Missouri, according to a Missouri State Highway Patrol traffic accident report. The Chevrolet left the right side of the road, then re-entered the roadway and crossed U.S. 50 Business, the report said. The car was thrown into the air and struck a northbound Acura RDX that was stopped at an intersection. Both vehicles left the road and the Acura also struck a traffic sign, the report said.

Derek Moffett, 55, of Erie, and Patricia Moffett, 83, of Overland Park, Kansas, died at the scene, the report said. Alexandria Moffett, 19, and a 16-year-old girl whose identity is not being released because of her age, both of Erie, were flown by air ambulance to Research Medical Center in Kansas City in serious condition, according to highway patrol.

The 16-year-old driver of the Chevrolet was taken to Western Missouri Medical Center with minor injuries, the report said.
