MVD says excessive speed was the reason for bus accident in Kochi; autopsy of biker today

Kochi: A day after a private bus accident claimed a life here, the Motor Vehicle Department said that overspeeding was the cause of the accident. According to the initial findings of the MVD officials, the bus of Kallada Travels hit the traffic signal and overturned after skidding off the slippery road when the driver applied emergency brakes on seeing the red light. On inspection, the officials found that the rear tyres of the bus were almost worn out.

At the same time, the MVD suspects that deficiencies in the traffic light system played a role in the accident.

The Panangad police have filed a case against the bus driver, Palapandy of Tenkasy, under Section 304A of the IPC (for careless and reckless driving causing death). According to sources, two other crew members of the bus are also in police custody.

Wagamon native Jijo Sebastian (33) lost his life while 11 others were injured in the bus accident on Sunday morning. Jijo was trapped under the bus for nearly 25 minutes, witnesses said. Manorama News reported that his autopsy will be conducted at Kalamassery Government Medical College Hospital on Monday. Later, his body will be taken to the textile factory where he was employed for a public burial. His funeral will be held in Wagamon on Tuesday.
