NYPD: New York father left ‘manifesto’ on family tensions before killing brother in murder-suicide

The father of three who shot his brother in the family’s Queens home and then killed himself spiraled into madness after his family taunted him about his financial shortcomings and failed grocery store, police said Tuesday.

Karamjit Multani left a “detailed, lengthy text message” that officials called a “manifesto” about ongoing family tensions before shooting his 27-year-old brother Vipanpal Multani nine times in the tragic murder-suicide on Saturday night.

NYPD Criminal Investigation Chief Joseph Kenny said Karamjit Multani sent a message to his wife before the shooting describing the “abuse” he allegedly suffered at the hands of his brother, father and mother, who were injured in the shooting.

“There have been some suggestions that he has given his son a sheikh (religious title), although this appears to be something that only the eldest man in the family, the father, can do,” Kenny said on Tuesday.

“But they argued about it, argued about financial problems and argued about the preferential treatment he felt his brother was receiving because he was more successful.”

The unrest took a deadly turn after the family patriarch gave money and property to his two sons so they could start their own businesses, Kenny said.

Vipanpal Multani opened a successful delicatessen in Valley Stream, while his murderous brother attempted to open a grocery store in Indiana, which failed “miserably” and went bankrupt.

“There is a lot of tension between him and his brother because of derogatory comments about him being a failure,” Kenny said. “His father is making life difficult for him because the business in Indiana is not successful.”

The night before the shooting, the father told his murderous son that he wanted him out of the house, so Karamjit Multani put his wife and three children on a plane back to Indiana.

And then an argument broke out at family dinner on Saturday, causing everyone to go their separate ways before gunshots rocked the South Richmond Hill neighborhood.

“The 27-year-old brother goes to his room to sleep when the gunman comes in and starts shooting at him with two pistols,” Kenny said, adding: “The father comes into the room and manages to grab a pistol from the gunman. The mother throws herself on her 27-year-old son while he is still shooting, while she is shot.”

Karamjit Multani then fled the house and ran down the street before committing suicide.

“We have video of him taking off his turban and shooting himself once in the head, killing himself,” Kenny said. “As he’s running, he drops the gun, picks it up, accidentally fires a shot, runs a few more steps, stops and just shoots himself in the head.”

Vipanpal Multani was shot nine times, four times in the upper body and once in the chest and chin, police said. The mother was shot in the arm and upper body and taken to hospital.

While police said the shooting was the result of simmering bitterness, Mandeep, a family friend, told The Post on Tuesday that the murder-suicide came “out of the blue.”

Family and friends were seen entering and leaving the house as they were escorted in in a Rolls-Royce SUV.

The neighbors were also stunned and described the family as “super quiet.”

“That’s why we can’t believe it. They looked nice,” said Zah, who only goes by her first name, about the two brothers.

Another neighbor, 35-year-old Gina Fernandez, often saw Karamjit playing outside with his three children and noticed that the two siblings seemed very close.

“We never heard the brothers fight,” she added. “They’re always together, so I don’t know what happened. They’re the best brothers, you know, they hang out together… They were nice people. All of them.”

The grieving father had previously told CBS 2 he was unsure what sparked the shooting.

“No big problems,” he said when asked if the two brothers had any problems. “Sometimes little disagreements, no problems.”
