London man arrested after suspected break-in at his home as part of arson investigation

LONDON, Kentucky – A Kentucky man faces charges in connection with an arson investigation.

Kentucky State Police Post 11 said it was called to investigate a fire at a home on Laurel River Church Road in London, Kentucky on Sunday.

Police said evidence was found that the residence had been broken into before the building was set on fire.

Patrol officers and Officer Robert Smith then went to the scene. According to authorities, they found that suspects had forced their way into the building, disabled the alarm system and stole items valued at over $10,000.

According to KSP, the fire was set to cover up the crime.

According to authorities, many of the stolen items were found in a neighbor’s home.

The suspect, 47-year-old Billy J. Swafford of London, was charged with first-degree arson, second-degree burglary and possession of burglary tools.

Swafford was booked into the Laurel County Detention Center. The investigation is ongoing.
