Ryan Garcia banned for one year, fight against Devin Haney declared void

Boxer Ryan Garcia has been banned until April 2025 due to a positive drug test and will lose his purse for the fight against Devin Haney as part of an agreement with the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC), the New York Department of State announced on Thursday.

Garcia’s share of the purse is $1.1 million, said Pat English, an attorney representing Haney. The purse amount will be paid back to the event organizer, not the NYSAC, according to the New York Department of State, which told USA TODAY Sports it could not confirm the dollar amount.

Garcia’s license as a professional boxer in New York State will be suspended until April 20, 2025, exactly one year after his fight against Haney in Brooklyn, provided he provides the commission with a clean urinalysis, according to a press release from the New York Department of State.

Garcia’s majority decision win was changed to a no contest and the NYSAC imposed a $10,000 fine, the press release said. The NYSAC ruled on the matter because the fight took place in New York.

Andy Foster, executive director of the California State Athletic Commission, said he would maintain the ban and expects all other states to do the same.

A statement released on behalf of 25-year-old Garcia said the boxer was the victim of a contaminated dietary supplement.

“Ryan has voluntarily submitted to random testing for many years, even out of competition, and has never had any problems,” the statement said. “He has maintained an impeccable and clean record throughout his career, taking the sport of boxing to a significantly higher level and earning the respect and admiration of millions of fans around the world.”

The statement said the amount of Ostarine was too small to give him an advantage over Haney. It added: “Fans will always remember his performance against Haney as a masterpiece and it will never be forgotten.”

BodyHealth, the manufacturer of one of the two supplements Garcia claimed were contaminated with Ostarine and blamed for his failed drug tests, said two accredited laboratories found after testing that the product did not contain Ostarine.
