Veteran attacked in Chicago suspected of hate crime – AsAmNews

An Iraq War veteran warned other Asian Americans about a group that attacked him for no apparent reason outside a Chicago grocery store, CBS Chicago reports.

Kevin Qin describes the attack, which left him with a concussion, as a racially motivated hate crime.

He said the group of seven to 10 men appeared out of nowhere.

“I was just about to go into the store, minding my own business, and before I knew it, all hell broke loose,” he told ABC7 News.

A passerby came to his aid and managed to interrupt the attack long enough for Qin to escape and call the police.

Authorities said they had no motive for the incident, although Qin was convinced it was a hate crime.

He says they were yelling, “Hey, this Chinese (swear word) is probably trying to gang up on me or something,” according to CBS Chicago.

Community activist Dr. Kim Tee expressed her disbelief at what happened.

“He survived the Iraq war but was almost killed here in his home in Chicago,” Tee told ABC7.

The attack occurred on Tuesday evening. Kim says he is still suffering from headaches, nausea and injuries to his wrist, elbow and knee.

“I remember someone tugging on my top and dragging me across the floor. That’s when I hit the side of my head,” he said. “And I guess that’s when I kind of lost consciousness.”
