Pilot dies after helicopter crash in swamp in northern New York state

The pilot of a small helicopter was killed in a crash in a “swamp” in northern New York state on Saturday afternoon, police said.

The man, whose identity authorities have not yet determined, was found seriously injured after the Schweizer 269C helicopter crashed in a “swampy area” near West Carthage, about 70 miles north of Syracuse, at about 2:45 p.m., New York State Police said in a statement.

The pilot was taken to Carthage Area Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of the crash was initially unknown, but the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) were dispatched to the scene of the accident to investigate, police said.

The pilot was the plane’s only passenger, the FAA said in a statement.

“An NTSB investigator is expected to be on site today to further document the accident scene and examine the aircraft. The aircraft will then be recovered and transported to a secure facility for further examination,” an agency spokesman said in a statement.
