The golf collaboration between Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry is star-studded, and the latter has revealed an incident that has become well known among fans.

Open Championship contender Shane Lowry is a big name in his own right – but even he feels the aura of the Rory McIlroy effect.

This came after the pair received a standing ovation as they left a New Orleans restaurant where they had enjoyed a “drink lunch” together. Ireland’s golfing greats agreed to team up as a pair for this year’s Zurich Classic after chatting over drinks and then went on to win the Louisiana title at their first attempt as a pair.

But despite his own reputation on the PGA and European tours, Lowry was under no illusions that the applause as he left the French restaurant was most likely for his partner. And he believes this was largely due to an exorbitant purchase.

“It was fancy, but not really. It was right off Bourbon Street,” Lowry, 37, told the Fore Play podcast when asked about the best restaurant in New Orleans at the Open. “We got a standing ovation when we left the restaurant; well, I was with Rory.”

When asked who the inspiration for the clapping was, he replied: “It was for Rory. He ordered a very expensive bottle of wine (laughs). So yeah, that was probably it!”

McIlroy, 35, previously revealed that it was he who asked Lowry if they could work together after his usual partner Padraig Harrington moved to the Champions Tour, and that collaboration is clearly benefiting them following their victory in Zurich.

Today, McIlroy is cheering from the sidelines as his compatriot tries to claim his second Open Championship title at Royal Troon. A hugely disappointing 77 in Saturday’s third round saw Lowry fall from the top of the leaderboard to ninth, but he still has a chance, sitting just three shots behind the leader ahead of Sunday’s play.

“I can’t wait to watch this weekend. He’s enjoying these conditions,” McIlroy said of his close friend before the championship rounds. “He’s motivated for this more than anything else. I’m looking forward to cheering him on and hopefully getting his second jug.”
