TBI agents investigate officer-involved shooting in Knox County – TBINewsroom.com

At the request of 6th Judicial District Attorney General Charme Allen, TBI agents are investigating the circumstances leading to an officer-involved shooting that occurred Wednesday afternoon in Knox County.

Preliminary information indicates that shortly after 5:00 p.m., Knox County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report that a male subject had threatened to harm himself in Clayton Park in Knoxville. A short time later, officers made contact with the man, who was armed with a weapon. During the encounter, shots were fired for reasons that are still unclear. The male subject was struck and taken to a local hospital for treatment. No deputies were injured in the incident.

TBI agents are working to independently investigate the series of events that led to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, the results of the investigation are communicated to the Prosecutor General’s Office for further review and review. The TBI acts solely as an expert witness in its cases and does not determine whether an officer’s actions in such matters were justified. That decision rests with the district attorney, who requests TBI involvement.

The TBI does not identify officers involved in incidents of this nature, but instead refers questions of this nature to the appropriate department, which may respond at its discretion.
