19-year-old hiker dead, video shows her diving into river

Authorities in the US state of Utah have confirmed the death of a 19-year-old woman who disappeared while hiking alone with her dog. A cell phone video showing her entering the water was found among her belongings.

In a statement to PEOPLE on Monday, June 10, Sergeant Garrett Dutson of the Utah County Sheriff’s Office provided an update and identification of the victim.

“Cynthia Ann Grimwood, 19, of Springville, Utah, was hiking with her dog to Horsetail Falls in Alpine on Friday,” Dutson’s statement said.

“At around 3 p.m., our dispatch center received a call from two hikers who had found her dog and personal items, including a video on her phone showing her entering the water,” the statement continued. “This sparked an hours-long search for the woman. Her body was found Friday night but was not recovered until Saturday morning for safety reasons.”

According to KSL NewsRadio 102.7, Dutson said Grimwood’s pet was returned to her family.

In an article the news agency published before her body was discovered, Sergeant Spencer Cannon of the Utah County Sheriff’s Office said the department was investigating all possible scenarios of what might have happened to Grimwood.

“We are investigating what may have happened to the young woman. SAR and several fire departments are involved in the investigation, including a DPS helicopter,” Cannon said.

After her body was recovered, Dutson said the victim probably underestimated the speed and force of the water she was caught in.

“The water is super high and moving super fast,” he said, according to KSL.
