Students of ZPHS Peruvancha in Kallur Mandal in Khammam district tell the writers about their plight.

Khammam: A teacher, reportedly annoyed by the unusual hairstyles and improper behavior of some students, cut the hair of about 15 students with scissors. The incident led to a protest by students and their parents against the forced haircuts, after which the teacher was suspended.

The incident, which garnered attention on social media, occurred at Zilla Parishad High School, Peruvancha in Kallur Mandal on Saturday. English teacher D Shirisha allegedly cut the hair of nearly 15 students of classes 8, 9 and 10 on the school premises.

She said the reason was that the students tended to be naughty in class, lagging behind in class and throwing their hair back when answering questions. She told the media that the students had been asked several times to get a proper haircut while attending school, but to no avail.

Since Shirisha cut her hair in her own way, it became uneven and this angered the students and their parents who then protested in the school. The teacher openly said that the students objected to cutting their hair and said that they would be ashamed if they cut the hair and advised them to get it cut at the hairdresser.

When contacted, District Education Superintendent E Somashekhara Sharma said on Sunday that the teacher has been suspended and an inquiry has been ordered into the incident. Meanwhile, several teachers’ associations wanted to withdraw the suspension orders against Shirisha, who won the best teacher award.

Speaking to Telangana Today, Devarakonda Saidulu, general secretary of Telangana State STF, said there was nothing wrong in asking students to come to school with neat hair and clean clothes. Teachers had a moral and social responsibility towards students and they were worried about the parents’ reaction to the incident.

When a video of students speaking to the media was shared on social media and broadcast on television, many spoke out in support of the teacher, saying it takes courage to bring order to the schools and it is good for the future of the students.
