  • Former Luzerne County band leader convicted of sexual assault

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania – The Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office announced the conviction of a former band director for sexually abusing a student in 2019.

Theron Roberts, 41, was convicted late Thursday afternoon of sexual assault and enticement of a minor and two counts of sexual assault. The verdict was reached by a jury that related to events that occurred during Roberts’ time as band director at Crestwood High School.

Attorney General Michelle Henry emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating: “The defendant abused his position of power and spent time training the student and gaining her trust before attacking her.” She praised the jury’s diligence and the victim’s courage in confronting the perpetrator in court to ensure justice.

According to witnesses, Roberts began making inappropriate advances toward the victim as early as seventh grade, escalating to physical contact and sexual innuendo during one-on-one instruction and comments about the victim’s personal relationships. The abuse reached its peak in tenth grade, when Roberts forcibly groped the victim in a secluded area and forced her to remain silent.

Sentencing for Roberts is scheduled for September 27.

Orange County, New York – Chauncey Smith, 23, of Pine Bush, was sentenced to three to nine years in prison for a car crash that seriously injured a teenager, Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced.
