Motorcyclist dies after collision with pickup truck

Market Street between 21st and 24th streets on the northeast side was closed during the investigation.

SALEM, Oregon – A man was killed in a collision with a pickup truck in Salem on Friday evening.

Salem Police were called to the scene of the accident at approximately 4:45 p.m. According to Salem Police, the preliminary investigation by the Salem Police Department’s traffic team revealed that a 22-year-old man, William Dale Ryan of Salem, was traveling eastbound on Market Street on his motorcycle, approaching 23rd Street northeast.

A 26-year-old woman, Tania Vargas Campos of Salem, was driving a pickup truck west on Market Street when she turned onto southbound 23rd Street. Ryan then collided with the truck’s passenger door, police said. Witnesses said the motorcycle was “traveling at a high rate of speed.”

Ryan was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Campos remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Salem police said the traffic team has responded to 15 serious traffic accidents so far in 2024, all of which resulted in fatalities.
