Cyclist boy killed in hit-and-run accident in North Lauderdale

A boy was killed in a hit-and-run crash in North Lauderdale on Thursday while riding his bike home from work, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

Mark Garay was riding north in the bike lane near the 5100 block of North State Road 7 shortly after midnight Thursday when a driver traveling in the same direction drifted into the bike lane and struck Garay, sending him flying to the side of the road, the sheriff’s office said in a news release Tuesday. The driver fled north, made a U-turn and headed south.

Garay was found about an hour after the accident “after his family became concerned that he had not returned home from work,” the sheriff’s office said. They did not say who found Garay or release his age, other than to say he was a minor.

After Garay was found, Fort Lauderdale Fire Department arrived at the scene and pronounced him dead, the sheriff’s office said.

Investigators believe the car may have been an older Crown Victoria or Grand Marquis, a white four-door sedan with tinted windows.
