Shooting in Akron, Ohio: 1 dead, 24 injured

AKRON, Ohio (WJW) — One person is dead and at least two dozen were injured, some seriously, after a shooting in Akron, Ohio, early Sunday morning.

According to a press release from Akron Police, several callers to 911 reported shots fired in the area of ​​Kelly Avenue and 8th Avenue shortly after midnight.


Shortly thereafter, area hospitals reported numerous patients coming to the emergency room with gunshot wounds. By Sunday morning, Akron police counted at least 25 victims, including a 27-year-old man who died. His identity has not been released.

Initial reports from the authorities said there were 26 victims. On Sunday morning, the total was revised to 25 victims and one dead.

Officers recovered a firearm and several dozen cartridge cases at the scene, the press release said. The investigation is still in its early stages and police did not release any further information about the victims or suspects.

No arrests were made. Local media reports indicate that a street party was taking place in the area before the shooting occurred, The Associated Press reported.

Akron Mayor Shammas Malik and Police Chief Brian Harding released a statement Sunday morning saying, “This morning, our city is reeling from the devastation caused by senseless violence. With more than two dozen victims, the pain and trauma are being felt throughout Akron today as we search for answers. As with all acts of violence in our city, our thoughts are with the victims and their families.”

“We will bring those responsible to justice and we need the help of our community to do so,” the statement continued. “Those with information about this gruesome shooting must come forward to prevent further violence and retaliation. This can be done anonymously.”

Brian Lucey, president of the Akron Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7, shared his concerns with Nexstars WJW’s FOX 8 I-Team following the shooting.

“We can always use more police officers, especially patrol officers,” Lucey said. “And when it comes to violence in the city, proactive policing, like traffic stops and detaining suspects, is the only thing that can slow it down.”
