BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – The Cocoa Police Department has exceeded all requirements to be designated as an Excelsior Agency by the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation.

This prestigious recognition testifies to the consistent adherence to the highest quality standards by the department, which has been accredited at least five times without conditions.

Achieving Excelsior status represents the pinnacle of accreditation for a law enforcement agency in Florida.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the men and women of this agency,” said Cocoa Mayor Michael C. Blake.

“This achievement is the culmination of 18 years of hard work and perseverance. It is a testament to the agency’s unwavering commitment to excellence and positions us as a leading law enforcement agency not only in our state, but across the country.”

In April, a team of assessors spent three days reviewing the department’s files, policies, procedures and documentation, and compliance with CFA standards. The team interviewed staff and reviewed equipment, training and all criteria required to demonstrate compliance with more than 200 professional standards.

These standards govern everything from storage of equipment and evidence to use of force, record keeping, training, and everything in between.

“Throughout the evaluation process, it was clear to the evaluation team that the Cocoa Police Department is a dedicated, professional agency for which accreditation is a given,” said team leader Jacqueline Wolfe.

“Chief Collier and his staff are committed to training the next generation of law enforcement by leading by example, holding each other accountable and praising the success of each member.”

All reviewers recognized the professionalism, compassion, enthusiasm, teamwork and quality of service provided by the Cocoa Police Department and unanimously recommended re-accreditation with Excelsior status. The commission presented the certificate to Chief Collier and his team on June 20 in Orlando.
