The mother of a 3-year-old child and a male family member were arrested on suspicion of child abuse in unincorporated San Bernardino Parish after the child was hospitalized with numerous injuries, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said Tuesday, June 11.

On Sunday, June 9, just before noon, officers responded to a report of an assault in the 6500 block of Pradera Avenue, where the 28-year-old male family member told authorities he was physically assaulted by another man during a drug deal. He also told authorities the man entered the child’s bedroom and assaulted the child, who was not in the home when officers arrived.

Around the same time, the child was taken to the emergency room by his 26-year-old mother and found with injuries to his head, chest, back, arms, legs and genitals, the sheriff’s department said.

During the investigation, it was determined that the man who attacked the family member did not harm the child. It was later determined that the mother had abandoned the child with the male family member six weeks earlier, who is believed to have mentally and physically abused the child during that time, the sheriff’s department said in a statement.

Details about how the mother came to have the child after her initial abandonment have not been released. The child was taken into the care of the San Bernardino County Department of Children and Family Services. The child’s condition was reported as stable.

Officers arrested the mother on suspicion of child abuse and child abandonment, while the male family member was arrested on suspicion of torture, child abuse and false imprisonment, authorities said.
