Man arrested in connection with shooting of Micha McCant in Fort Valley

Police Chief DJ Flores said McCant was shot while picking up his daughter from a middle school graduation ceremony.

MACON, Georgia – A man was arrested Wednesday in connection with the shooting death of 31-year-old Micah McCant at a Fort Valley middle school graduation ceremony, according to Police Chief DJ Flores.

Flores said they encountered the suspect, 36-year-old Dexter Oliver, at Vienna Circle. Authorities then stopped Oliver and arrested him for murder, Flores said.

McCant and another person were shot around 10 p.m. Sunday as he picked up her daughter from a graduation party. McCant died later that night in the hospital, Flores said.

It all started at an apartment called Royal Town Homes. At the time, Fort Valley police believe a middle school graduation party was taking place there, but the crowd there would soon grow to about 30 people.

“Some other teenagers came uninvited and there was a fight, a physical altercation,” Flores previously told 13WMAZ.

Flores said 10 adults were present when a fight broke out. He believes it started when the parents of some of the teens got into a fight and then shots were fired.

Two people were shot, including Flores.

Flores says they are searching Oliver’s grandmother’s house because they believe Oliver lives there.

The investigation is ongoing, but Flores said there is reasonable suspicion to arrest Oliver.

“We’re just going to continue to investigate,” Flores said. “If anyone has any information about Micah McCant’s murder, please contact Fort Valley Police.”
