Brave now the hunters

The Atlanta Braves have dominated the NL East division over the past few seasons and are used to being chased. This year, while the Phillies are off to their best start in team history, the Braves are now the chasers and sit in second place in the division. The Braves fell a season-high seven and a half games behind the Phillies after losing each of the first two games to the Pirates in Pittsburgh over the weekend. On Sunday, the Braves got another strong start from Chris Sale and cruised to an 8-1 victory. The big news, however, was the loss of 2023 NL MVP Ronald Acuna Jr. to a torn ACL that will sideline him for the remainder of the season.

The Braves are turning to veteran right-hander Charlie Morton to get the team back on a winning streak. Morton is 3-1 this season in nine starts with a 3.35 ERA and 1.20 WHIP. Morton allowed 40 hits in 51 innings pitched, including five home runs. He walked 21 batters and struck out 52 batters. Morton suffered the loss in his last start in Chicago against the Cubs. He allowed just two runs on four hits in five innings pitched, including eight strikeouts.

Key Injuries: 3B Austin Riley is day-to-day. RP Tyler Matzek, RP Blake Burkhalter, CF Jesse Franklin V and RF Ronald Acuna Jr. are out.

This will be the first meeting of the season between the Nationals and the Braves. Last year the Braves won the series 8-5 and the story was the Braves offensive production. Atlanta hit nearly .290 against the Nats and hit 18 home runs in 13 games. Atlanta has struggled to get going offensively this season, but the Nationals could be just what the doctor ordered for the Braves offense. Braves starter Morton has found his strikeout groove this season with 52 strikeouts in 51 innings so far. He just had 8 strikeouts against the Cubs in Chicago. Morton should be successful against a national team that is hitting just .226 as a team.

Take Atlanta with the money line.

The Nationals have gone over in three of Parker’s five starts this season. The Braves led the Nationals pitching staff last year with 18 home runs and a .290 batting average. The Braves are 11th in baseball in runs per game at home this season. The weather is getting warmer in Georgia and that will help improve some electric power numbers in the future. Expect a good show of power on Memorial Day, especially from the Braves.

Take over.
