Houston Astros linked to potential trade for Cubs star

The Houston Astros are starting to look like a team that could buy before the MLB trade deadline later this month. Over their last 13 games, they are 11-2. That puts the Astros in a legitimate playoff race.

At this point, they are just two games behind the Seattle Mariners in the AL West division.

Ahead of the trade deadline, there are a couple of moves that could make them a serious contender. They have been linked to several different names, with first base being a big favorite as a position they could target in trade discussions.

Another name that has been floated as a potential target for Houston is Chicago Cubs star Cody Bellinger.

Launderer’s Report We looked at the top 10 teams that could trade for Bellinger. The Astros were ranked No. 8 on the list.

“The Astros would hypothetically use Bellinger at first base, where he has a league-low minus-1.6 rWAR. But they’re another team that needs arms more than hitters, and their own payroll issue is tied to the luxury tax, among other things.”

Clearly, Houston needs to seriously focus on pitching. However, based on the price, Bellinger would be a major luxury addition.

During the 2024 season with the Cubs, Bellinger played in 73 games. He hit .274/.334/.427 and also hit nine home runs along with 36 RBIs.

At 28, Bellinger is still in the prime of his career. It’s possible this is a long-term choice.

Bellinger has two years left on his contract after the 2024 season. That being said, he has opt-out options for each of the next two years. There’s a good chance he could opt out of his current deal after this season and seek a long-term deal.

If things go well with the Astros, it would make sense to sign him long-term. Bellinger wants to find a long-term home, but he wants to be paid fairly.

That being said, it will be interesting to monitor the Cubs in the coming weeks. If they decide to trade before the deadline, Houston should absolutely express interest in trading Bellinger if the price is right.
