In a horrific incident on Saturday night in Barnala’s Ram Rajya Colony, an Akali leader killed his 85-year-old mother, 21-year-old daughter, his dog and finally himself. The man, identified as Kulvir Singh Mann, was in his mid-50s. His mother Balwant Kaur and daughter Nimrat Kaur were also found dead at the scene along with their pug.

The tragedy was discovered around 7:15 pm when Ramandeep Kaur Mann, Kulvir’s wife, returned home from the market and found that the main gate was locked from inside. Unable to get in, she asked neighbours for help. When they entered the gate, they found the bodies lying in a pool of blood.

Sandeep Malik, Barnala police commissioner, said, “The incident took place around 6.30 pm on Saturday. Ramandeep returned around 7.15 pm and discovered the crime scene.”

According to Ramandeep’s statement, Kulvir had been taking antidepressants for over a decade and had undergone a surgery a few years ago. Police revealed that Kulvir used his licensed revolver for the crime. CCTV footage from the house showed that Kulvir first shot his daughter, then his elderly mother and his dog before turning the gun on himself.

“Nimrat had studied in Canada on a student visa and was taking a break in India,” added SSP Malik. “Ramandeep is now the only surviving family member.”

While the police investigation is still ongoing, sources have indicated that forensic experts and the Barnala police have invoked Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code, 1973, which is applicable in cases of suicide, murder, accident
Death or death under suspicious circumstances.

The bodies will be handed over to the families after the autopsy on Sunday afternoon.

Kulvir Singh Mann was temporarily active in Akali Dal programmes and was often seen with SAD leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and other party members. Police are continuing their investigation to uncover more details about this tragic event.
