But a look into an alternate timeline shows that Robin’s survival would have meant the end for the Joker.

In a preview for Death in the family: Robin is alive! #1 by JM DeMatteis and Rick Leonardi, the Joker was shot directly in the forehead. His body collapses on the ground as the person who looks like Batman walks away from the deceased Harlequin of Hate.


News of the Joker’s death surfaces and reporters speculate that Batman may have had a hand in it. While Batman is in the Batcave contemplating the death, Jason Todd stands on top of a building in his Robin costume, crying in the rain. The story then flashes back to when Jason first woke up after the Joker’s attack.

There isn’t a DC Comics fan who doesn’t know about the infamous poll that led to the second Robin being murdered in the classic “Death in the Family” storyline. Fans voted for Jason Todd to die at the hands of the Joker, but by a very small margin. After over three decades, DC Comics released the comic that would have appeared had fans voted to save Jason. Batman No. 428: Robin Lives No. 1a “fauxsimile” edition of the original comic Robin survived the explosion in which he was trapped, but fell into a coma due to the trauma he suffered.


Batman #428: Robin Lives! was just a small glimpse into how “Death in the Family” would have played out if Jason had survived his encounter. While fans knew Jason survived, they had no idea what would have happened next. The real question is who killed the Joker in this timeline. It’s hard to imagine Batman crossing the line to kill Joker when Bruce didn’t kill his opponent in the Prime continuity. Jason, on the other hand, managed to cross the line to kill Joker.than any reason to want to kill the Joker for what the villain did to poor Robin.

When Jason Todd came back to life in the Under the Red Hood storyline, the first thing he did was seek revenge on his killer. It’s understandable that a living Jason would want to do the same. He’s just been through torture that most people can’t even imagine. But will Jason actually do what he never could as an adult? However things turn out, one thing is certain: In a world where Jason lives, the joker doesn’t last as long anymore.
