Former NRL star Jarryd Hayne wins appeal to overturn rape conviction, door open for fourth trial

Former rugby star Jarryd Hayne has won his appeal and overturned his conviction for raping a woman in her Newcastle home in 2018.

Hayne, 36, appeared in the New South Wales Supreme Court wearing a green prison tracksuit and awaiting the outcome of his appeal.

Judge Stephen Rothman allowed the appeal on two of the three grounds raised by Haynes’ defense.

The criminal appeals court overturned the convictions and ordered a new trial.

“Whether there will be a retrial is a matter for the Attorney General,” said Judge Rothman.

Hayne is serving a prison sentence of four years and nine months after being found guilty in April last year.
