Woman on Mackinac Island dies after paddleboarding incident | WJMN

MACKINAC ISLAND, Michigan (WJMN) – A 22-year-old Mackinac Island woman has died as a result of a paddleboarding accident on Lake Huron.

According to the Michigan State Police (MSP), officers along with Mackinac Island police and search and rescue responded to a report of a person in distress shortly after 9:00 a.m. Monday.


Witnesses reported seeing a paddleboarder in the water calling for help. The person who called 911 lost sight of the woman. The United States Coast Guard found her and initiated rescue efforts. She was flown to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. She died later Monday evening.

The woman’s name has not been released. The family has been notified.

A press release from the MSP stated that at the time of the incident, Lake Huron was experiencing strong winds with whitecaps, the air temperature was about 11°C and the water temperature was less than 14°C.
