Fourth trespassing incident at Lee County schools in 2024

The school is intended for teachers and students, but some public schools in Lee County have recently had unwanted guests on the grounds. A teacher noticed a suspicious man walking in the school parking lot at Orange River Elementary on Thursday before school started. This teacher reported seeing Antonio Aguilar on school grounds at the bus ramp just before 8 a.m. When officers arrived, the man had left the property but was not cooperating. They arrested him after a short chase. Aguilar is the second man charged with trespassing at Orange River Elementary in the last month. Back in April, Patrick Turner was caught trespassing at school. Officials say a child let him in and he claimed his child went there, but he didn’t have a student at Orange River See something unusual. “Don’t hesitate to report it,” said David Newlan, director of security for Lee County Public Schools. This incident marks the fourth time people have trespassed on school grounds in Lee County and been arrested in 2024. A man jumped the fence at Littleton Elementary School and a woman was arrested at Gateway Elementary School for jumping a fence . “With all of these things that happened, there was no intention to get into the school or any of the students,” Newlan said. Newlan is glad none of the intruders were on the property for long. “The security levels that we have in place, we look at them every day to see how we can improve, and that shows that these things that we’ve been talking about.” “The security measures that are being put in place today are being recognized said Newlan. They say some schools are installing gates, but now they think the security measures in place are working.

Aguilar is the second man charged with trespassing at Orange River Elementary in the last month.

Back in April, Patrick Turner was caught entering the school. Officials say a child let him in and he claimed his child went there, but he doesn’t have a student at Orange River.

“Situational awareness, paying attention to your surroundings, that’s what we tell teachers and parents – if you see something unusual. Don’t hesitate to report it,” said David Newlan, chief of security for Lee County Public Schools.

This incident marks the fourth time people have been trespassed on school grounds in Lee County and arrested in 2024. Officials say a man jumped the fence at Littleton Elementary School and a woman was arrested for jumping a fence at Gateway Elementary School.

“With all of these things that happened, there was no intent to get into the school or any of the students,” Newlan said.

Newlan is glad that none of the intruders were on the property for long.

“The levels of security that we have, we review every day to see how we can improve, and this shows that the things we talked about today are recognized,” Newlan said.
