Houston Astros’ top target expected to be traded

The Houston Astros’ bullpen has been average for most of the season, ranking 14th in earned run average. Their 3.81 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 39 home runs allowed and 126 walks are all areas where they can improve as the trade deadline approaches.

Injuries are largely to blame for the bullpen’s struggles. However, after losing Phil Maton, Hector Neris and Ryne Stanek in the offseason, it’s understandable that the bullpen hasn’t been the same.

While none of these three relief pitchers are elite, they have always found a way to get the job done for the Astros. Having reliable relief pitchers is as important as anything, and they have been as reliable as they come.

Josh Hader’s recent struggles raise even more concerns, but they also give management a reason to go out and sign a reliever or two.

Tanner Scott could be the perfect addition, and according to Craig Mish of The Miami Herald, the left-hander should be “transferred”.

“The Marlins’ lone All-Star is on an expiring contract, meaning he’ll become a free agent at the end of the 2024 season. The left-hander has been a dominant force in the ninth inning and could fit in with any contending club. The most obvious choice would be a return to Baltimore, which will need left-handed help late in the season and in the playoffs if it qualifies…

“A dozen teams have inquired about Scott. He’ll likely be traded soon, but for now, he’ll be wearing a Marlins jersey next Tuesday night in the Midsummer Classic in Arlington.”

As Mish points out, the Baltimore Orioles are a expected contender. Houston has to recognize that not only would they be losing a player they might need if he landed with the Orioles, but he would also be making a better team than they would likely play in October.

It may sound crazy to some, but Scott has been so good that he could be the difference maker in a series.

His 1.42 ERA and 1.08 WHIP rank among the best in baseball. This is also his second straight year of showing elite quality on the mound, as he posted a 2.31 ERA and 0.99 WHIP during the 2023 campaign.

Based on the price, the Astros should consider bringing in this player. Every contending team needs help in their bullpen, and adding arguably the best on the market would be a great move for the organization.
