Music superstar Justin Timberlake arrested after drunk driving and remanded in custody

Justin Timberlake was arrested Monday night in Sag Harbor on Long Island in New York, police confirmed to popular entertainment website Variety. A Sag Harbor police spokesperson confirmed to Variety that the singer was expected to be charged with at least one DUI offense on Tuesday morning. Timberlake was still in custody Tuesday morning, according to NBC.

The department is expected to issue an official statement later Tuesday, the spokesperson said. Several representatives for the singer did not immediately respond to Variety’s request for comment. This incident appears to be Timberlake’s first arrest.

Timberlake is currently on his “Forget Tomorrow” world tour in support of his latest album, “Everything I Thought It Was,” released in March. Next week, he will perform two shows each at the United Center in Chicago and Madison Square Garden in New York. The North American leg of the tour will end on July 9 in Kentucky, followed by European dates from late July to September before returning to North America in October. The final date is scheduled for December 20 in Kansas City.

Although his album received a mediocre response from both critics and audiences, the tour received rave reviews. “Timberlake is essentially a consummate showman, schooled in the boy-band philosophy where precision is key,” wrote Variety’s Steven J. Horowitz of a show at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. “At 43, Timberlake is as sharp and precise as he has been throughout his decades-long career, hitting every cue and note with intent and purpose.”

“He just released his sixth solo album, Everything I Thought It Was, a sprawling project that often drew on old cliches and musical habits, as well as the barrage of slanderous headlines that have dogged him in recent years,” referring to Timberlake’s allegedly unkind treatment of Britney Spears during their relationship, and allowing Janet Jackson to essentially take the blame for the infamous “wardrobe malfunction” during their joint performance at the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show.

“But none of that existed in the world he created for his electrifying LA performance, where hordes of millennials gathered to revisit hits of the past and engage with newer, less familiar material. His last tour in support of his 2018 album Man of the Woods was an interactive affair on a stage that snaked through the crowd. For Forget Tomorrow, Timberlake opted for a simpler, more traditional setup, with a stage at the front of the venue and a raised platform in the background, which he used for a more acoustic set of songs. A mobile monolith that hovered above and behind him for much of the set added technical flair and flashed images of Timberlake punctuating the songs with a psychedelic sing-song.”
