Man shot by police in Naugatuck Park, arrested: PD

NAUGATUCK, CT – A man armed with a knife who was shot by two Naugatuck police officers in a city park last month was released from a hospital and arrested earlier this week, according to police.

In a news release, police said 24-year-old Kyle O’Creene was arrested Tuesday after his release from Waterbury Hospital and appeared in court later that day.

He was charged with attempted assault on a police officer, carrying a dangerous weapon, obstructing an officer and reckless endangerment.

According to police, around 9 a.m. on April 25, officers received a report of a man with a knife who was acting erratically at Baummer’s Pond Park.

When officers searched the park on Mill Street, they found O’Creene near a picnic table with a knife in his hand, police said.

O’Creene then stood up and walked toward the officers, ignoring multiple commands to drop the knife. Officers initially attempted to subdue O’Creene with a Taser, but the use of the Taser was unsuccessful, police said.

As O’Creene continued to advance toward the officers with the knife, officers Crystal Hudson and Joseph Palhete fired their handguns, wounding O’Creene, police said.

Officers in the area immediately provided medical aid to O’Creene, who was ultimately taken to Waterbury Hospital for treatment.

Police also noted that the Office of the Inspector General’s investigation into the officer-involved shooting was ongoing Wednesday.
