Prajwal’s brother Suraj Revanna jailed for allegedly sexually assaulting a male JD(S) worker

Karnataka Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Dr Suraj Revanna, eldest son of HD Revanna and brother of Prajwal Revanna, was sentenced to 14 days in jail by a Bengaluru court on Sunday in connection with a sexual abuse case.

Suraj Revanna was arrested by the Hassan police this morning after being questioned at Hassan’s Cyber Station on Saturday evening.

A First Information Report (FIR) was filed against Suraj under sections 377 (wrongful offence), 342 (wrongful confinement), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (act committed by several persons with common intention) based on a complaint by a youth, who is also a worker of his party Janata Dal (Secular).

The young man had complained to the Director General of Police (DGP) and the Home Minister that Suraj Revanna had sexual intercourse with him at Gannigada Farm House in Channarayapatna taluk. He also alleged that he and his family were threatened by Suraj Revanna and his close friend Shivakumar of Hanumanahalli village.

Meanwhile, the Holenarsipur police have registered the case against the young man based on a complaint filed by Shivakumar, Suraj’s close aide. Shivakumar, who identified himself as the treasurer of Suraj Revanna Brigade in his complaint, alleged that the young man had threatened to accuse Revanna of sexual assault if he did not help him find a job. Shivakumar also claimed that the young man had demanded Rs 5 crore to avoid the allegedly false complaint.

The First Family of the Janata Dal (Secular) has been facing several controversies of late. After Suraj’s arrest, both HD Revanna’s sons, Prajwal and Suraj, are now in jail on rape charges, while HD Revanna and his wife Bhavani Revanna have been released on bail in a kidnapping case.

During the Lok Sabha elections, hundreds of videos were released purporting to show Prajwal sexually harassing women. He travelled to Germany on April 27, a week after the Hassan polls and just before the second phase of voting in Karnataka. The Karnataka government set up a special investigation team to investigate the allegations of sexual harassment against Prajwal, who was arrested on May 31 after returning to India.

HD Revanna was detained in connection with an alleged kidnapping case. The complainant alleged that HD Revanna abducted one of Prajwal’s alleged victims to prevent her from reporting the matter to the authorities. He was arrested on May 4 and released 10 days later.

Bhavani, who is also an accused in the kidnapping case, was granted interim bail last week.
