Missing woman from Indonesian forest found dead in the belly of a 6-meter-long python

A woman missing in Indonesia was found dead in the belly of a six-meter-long python.

Farida, 45, a mother of four, disappeared on Thursday evening as she walked through a forest to sell food at a market in the central Indonesian province of Sulawesi.

Her husband Noni, 55, became suspicious when he found his wife’s belongings in the forest and discovered a 6-meter-long python with a bloated belly. The man, who was identified in local media along with his wife by only one name, raised alarm among locals.

It is believed that the python bit her leg and wrapped itself around her body to suffocate her before swallowing her whole.

The villagers caught the python, slit open its stomach and found the dead woman inside.

Suardi Rosi, the village chief of Kalempang where the family lived, said the husband had searched for his wife in the forest area and “found her belongings … which made him suspicious.”

“The villagers then searched the area. They soon discovered a python with a large belly,” said Rosi.

“Several other villages then helped him catch the python. His wife’s body was found in the stomach of a snake. She was brought to his house before being buried,” he was told by the Daily mail.

Her husband expressed regret over her death and said he would “forever be sorry for letting my wife go away alone.” After her body was returned to the village, many people gathered to mourn her death.

Cases of people being killed by pythons are rare, but are not uncommon in Indonesia, where several people have died in similar incidents.

Last year, a farmer in Tinanggea district of Southeast Sulawesi was strangled by a python. A local resident killed the 8-meter-long python when it tried to swallow him.

In 2022, a woman was swallowed by a python in Jambi province. Jahrah, 54, was collecting rubber from a plantation when she disappeared. Two days later, locals found a swollen snake and its body. In 2018, a mother of two was eaten alive by a python.
