Prosecutor: School crossing guard attacks parent with stop sign during argument

A Taunton, Massachusetts, school crossing guard was fired Monday after being accused of repeatedly striking a woman and her child with a stop sign stick during an altercation outside the high school. Louis Chaves, 68, of Taunton, was charged with two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, the stop sign stick, and one count of assault with a dangerous weapon, a shod foot. According to prosecutors, the incident involved a parent in a vehicle on Williams Street in front of Taunton High School. The woman said she stopped at the intersection when she sneezed and was looking for a tissue. The school crossing guard, later identified as Chaves, began yelling at her to keep driving. “He yelled at her while her child was in the car. The school crossing guard then stuck the stop sign stick through the passenger window and began swinging it around in the car, cursing at her and telling her she needed to get out of there,” the prosecutor said. “The defendant swung the stop sign stick inside the vehicle and struck the daughter in the arm.” Police say Chaves struck her child in the arm with the stick. When the woman got out of the car to confront him, he threw her to the ground, according to police. “When the mother got out of the vehicle and confronted the defendant about the attack, the defendant began to attack her with a stop sign stick and eventually threw her to the ground,” the prosecutor said. “(She) stated that while she was on the ground, the defendant dragged her and kicked her repeatedly. She had multiple abrasions and cuts on her arm.” Chaves was released after arraignment and will return to court on August 8. As Chaves left court, he lunged at the cameras while a woman pleaded with him and tried to restrain him. He is then seen on camera kicking a photographer, hitting another photographer and throwing a stick. “Taunton Public Schools is aware of a physical altercation involving a school crossing guard this morning (June 3),” Taunton Public Schools said in a statement. As a result of the incident, “the school crossing guard has been terminated effective immediately and is no longer an employee of Taunton Public Schools.” The woman was taken to Morton Hospital with cuts and abrasions.
