Air quality warning issued for Thursday ahead of heatwave

These conditions favor the formation of ground-level ozone, or smog, according to the warning from the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission and the Regional Air Pollution Control Agency for Clark, Darke, Greene, Miami, Montgomery and Preble counties, and the Southwest Ohio Air Quality Agency for Butler and Warren counties.

The air quality index is forecast at 105 for Thursday.

Any value of 101 or higher is considered “unhealthy for sensitive groups,” according to the authorities.

Elderly people, children and people with respiratory diseases should avoid prolonged and strenuous physical exertion. Those considered at risk should take more breaks when outdoors and engage in less strenuous activities.

If you have a cough, shortness of breath, or unusual tiredness, you should call your doctor.

No impact is expected for the general public. Most people can be active outdoors, but should take more breaks and do less strenuous activities.

To reduce ground-level ozone, people are encouraged to do the following:

  • Avoid driving if possible. If not, consider consolidating or postponing errands until the air quality alert is lifted. Avoid excessive idling while driving, especially at drive-thru lanes.
  • Do not refuel your vehicle until after 8 p.m. or wait until the warning has passed. Make sure the fuel tank cap is tightly closed to prevent petrol fumes from escaping.
  • Limit the use of petrol-powered household appliances such as lawn mowers, chainsaws, trimmers and chippers.
  • Mowing the lawn after 6 p.m.
