Charges against Scottie Scheffler dropped after arrest before PGA Championship

Prosecutors dropped charges against Scottie Scheffler on Wednesday, less than two weeks after the world’s best golfer arrested outside the PGA Championship in Louisville, Kentucky.

Jefferson County Prosecutor Mike O’Connell told a judge his office could not pursue the charges because Proof in the event of.

Scheffler was charged with second-degree assault on a police officer, third-degree criminal damage, reckless driving and failure to obey traffic signals when he was arrested outside the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, where the tournament was being held.

Scheffler’s lawyer had denied that the golfer had attacked anyone. In a statement, Scheffler described the incident as a “very chaotic situation” and a “big misunderstanding” and said he “never intended to disobey any instructions.”

O’Connell said Wednesday that the evidence confirmed Scheffler’s account of the incident as a misunderstanding between him and the arresting police officer.

“Mr. Scheffler’s actions and the evidence surrounding their exchange during this misunderstanding do not meet the elements of a crime,” O’Connell told the court.

Scheffler did not attend the hearing on Wednesday.

Scheffler was on his way to the golf course to get ready for his second round early on the morning of May 17 when he was caught in a traffic jam caused by a shuttle bus that had fatally struck a pedestrian, police said. When Scheffler tried to maneuver around the accident scene, police said he refused to comply with instructions and drove on, knocking the detective to the ground.

At the time of the incident, the detective did not have his body camera activated, which violated police procedures, officials said last week.

Video footage from a police mast camera and dashcam showed Scheffler being led to a police car.
