SCAM ALERT: Dale Co. officials warn of fake calls claiming to be from police | WDHN

DALE COUNTY, Alabama (WDHN) – The Dale County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone-related scam.

In the last 48 hours, 6 people have called to report the scam. The scam involves someone calling from (334) 784-7518 saying they are from the Dale County Sheriff’s Office and telling people they have missed jury duty or there is a warrant out for their arrest.

Officials say they will tell you to get in the car and come to the sheriff’s office. They will talk to you on the phone until you are back on the road and then redirect you to another location where you will be instructed to send them gift cards or wireless money transfers.

“You know, the main thing people need to understand is that we’re not going to call you if you have a warrant out for your arrest or if you’re not doing your jury duty,” said Dale County Sheriff Mason Bynum. “That’s not our standard procedure and we’re certainly not going to ask you for money.”

Sheriff Bynum recommends that if you receive a call and realize it is a scam, you continue to talk to the person because it will mean no one else becomes a victim.

The actual phone number for the Dale County Sheriff’s Office is (334) 774-3114.
