Police have backed an officer who was suspended from duty after being filmed kicking a man at Manchester Airport after new footage of the incident emerged.

Police watchdog Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) launched a criminal investigation into the Greater Manchester Police officer for assault after video emerged showing 19-year-old suspect Mohammed Fahir being kicked while he was being held on the ground on July 23.

The incident sparked angry protests in the city centre and Rochdale – but a new CCTV clip has now shown the lead-up to the now viral scene. The video, which the Manchester Evening News apparently shows two men who had recently attacked a police officer and two policewomen.

Following the release, the Greater Manchester Police Federation defended the police, saying the new footage put the incident in a “completely different light” and showed “that we must protect the protectors”.

Richard Cooke, chairman of the West Midlands Police Federation, agreed, saying MailOnline the new clip offers a “completely different perspective”.

New video footage shows chaos at Manchester Airport before man was kicked in the head

Three police officers – a man and two women – approach two men standing by one of the ticket machines and detain one of them, who was wearing a matching light blue top and shorts.

The second man, wearing a black t-shirt, then circles the male police officer who was holding the first man and appears to begin attacking him.

Then the two appear to start hitting each other, with the first man hitting the two policewomen several times.

The man in the black t-shirt is eventually tasered by the male police officer, after which the second man appears to knock down the other two police officers and then hits the male police officer on the back of the head.

After the male officer and the first man wrestle to the ground, the female officers appear to taser him. The male officer then stands up and appears to kick the man in the head, which is where the video ends.

This is the first time that footage of events in the moments before the first video showing the same incident has been released.

“Nobody has a complete picture” of the incident, says Mayor of Manchester

The Mayor of Greater Manchester said that “nobody has a full picture” of the incident at Manchester Airport earlier this week.

Andy Burnham urged people to “step back” and allow the authorities to conduct their investigations after the Manchester Evening News released new footage on Saturday showing the lead-up to an arrest in which a police officer allegedly kicked and stamped on a man as he lay face down.

Speaking on Sky News’ Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips, he said: “It’s a complicated situation, a very violent situation actually, and there have been problems on both sides.

“That’s why I asked other people not to judge too quickly, because the issue is so complex and no one knows all the facts, even if everyone expresses their opinion. No one knows the whole picture.”

Asked when a conclusion could be expected from the Independent Office for Police Conduct, Burnham said: “I know it’s a frustrating world we live in. Everyone wants instant conclusions, but that’s not life, is it?”

“Over the last few days, people have been making complete judgments about one side or the other. You pick a side in this whole thing and the truth is always somewhere in between.”

“Life is more complicated than people sometimes portray it on social media.”

The mayor said the incident went through three phases. Before the footage was made public, there had already been an argument on an airplane.

Lawyer for a family at the centre of the controversy announces his resignation

The lawyer for the family at the centre of the Manchester Airport controversy has announced his resignation.

In an interview with LBC, Akhmed Yakoob claimed that 19-year-old Muhammed Fahir was the victim of an “assassination attempt” and was now “fighting for his life”.

After his comments drew criticism, Mr Yakoob, a director at Birmingham-based firm Maurice Andrews Solicitors, accused the media of trying to “sabotage” him.

On Sunday evening, he spoke to reporters in the back seat of a car. Guardian He said: “You may have seen the various media reports about me over the last few days.

“The media have tried to sabotage me. While it is not the first time they have done this, they have made the whole situation about me rather than police brutality and police misconduct, which is unfair to Greater Manchester Police and the family.

“After consulting with the family, I have therefore decided to step back for the time being and have recommended a lawyer to the family. But I will keep a close eye on the matter.”
