Program: Laying in state of Representative Sheila Jackson Lee and funeral

From Monday through Thursday, people can pay tribute to the late congresswoman, who died Friday, July 19, after battling pancreatic cancer.

HOUSTON — This week, U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee will be honored and remembered in Houston. Flags will fly at City Hall and municipal buildings throughout Houston from Monday, July 29, through Thursday, August 1, to honor Jackson Lee.

President Joe Biden will travel to Houston on Monday to pay his respects.

Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to return to Houston on Wednesday, July 31. On Thursday, August 1, Harris will deliver a eulogy at Jackson Lee’s funeral.

Below is a look at what you can expect over the next four days and how you can pay your respects.

Monday, July 29: Representative Sheila Jackson Lee will be buried in a state chapel

Jackson Lee will lie in state at City Hall on Monday, July 29, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The public will be allowed to pay their respects and sign a book of condolences after a brief prayer service with Jackson Lee’s family, city leaders and faith leaders. An honor guard of representatives from the Houston Police Department and Fire Department will be in attendance.

Around 9:15 a.m., Houston Mayor Whitmire, faith leaders and members of Jackson Lee’s family will hold a brief program before the rotunda opens to the public.

Tuesday July 30: Visit

A visitation will be held Tuesday at God’s Grace Community Church at 9944 West Montgomery Road from 4 to 8 p.m.

Wednesday July 31: Visit and service

Visitation at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church at 3826 Wheeler Avenue from 11am-3pm, followed by a community farewell and appreciation service from 3pm-8pm

Thursday, August 1: Celebration of Life

Celebration of Life Service at 11 a.m. at Fallbrook Church at 12512 Walters Road in Houston.

About Representative Sheila Jackson Lee

Jackson Lee died on Friday, July 19, two months after announcing he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Known to her constituents simply as “Congresswoman,” Lee served the public for more than 30 years. Lee was instrumental in several legislative victories over the decades, including establishing the federal holiday Juneteenth and reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act.

Jackson Lee was born on January 12, 1950, in Queens, New York. She served on the Houston City Council from 1989 to 1994 and was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1995.

In March, she defeated Amanda Edwards in the Democratic primary. The Houston lawmaker has served on three congressional committees. She was a ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, the Homeland Security Committee and the House Budget Committee.
