Police: Items worth over $40,000 stolen from stores in northern Delaware

Delaware State Police have arrested a man accused of stealing more than $40,000 worth of eyeglasses, various household goods and cigarettes in a series of shoplifting incidents in New Castle County.

A 33-year-old Newark man faces dozens of charges, including 17 felony charges, for allegedly participating in multiple shoplifting incidents between May 26 and June 28.

Delaware State Police arrested the Newark man on June 30 after responding to a shoplifting incident at a Kohl’s store on Rocky Run Boulevard in Brandywine Hundred. At that time, police received a report of two men and a woman fleeing toward Concord Pike after the incident.

Officers recognized the man, who was later taken into custody, from “previous investigations.” While searching the man — who is not being named because Delaware Online/The News Journal typically identifies people facing charges only in the most serious cases — police found more than $2,000 worth of merchandise in his bag.

Authorities searched for the other two suspects but were unable to find them.

State police said the Newark man was later identified as one of the suspects responsible for “18 shoplifting incidents at multiple stores throughout New Castle County over the past month.”

These incidents occurred at Giant, Rite Aid, Royal Farms, Kohl’s, Sunglass Hut at Macy’s, Walgreens and Wawa, including several Kohl’s stores, and caused a total of over $40,000 in damages.

According to police, the descriptions of the suspects in these shoplifting incidents changed over the weeks.

The suspected accomplices have not yet been identified, police said.
