81-year-old man attacked in Duluth supermarket; suspect charged with attempted murder

A 43-year-old man is under arrest.

DULUTH, Minnesota – An 81-year-old man is hospitalized with “significant head injuries” after being attacked with a weapon at Mount Royal Market Friday morning, according to Duluth police.

Duluth police responded to the robbery around 8:50 a.m. at the supermarket in the 1600 block of Woodland Avenue.

When officers arrived, they found the man in a bathroom.

A 43-year-old Duluth man was later arrested in the area of ​​Wallace Avenue and 7th Street after fleeing the scene, according to police.

The suspect is being held in the St. Louis County Jail and is tentatively charged with attempted first-degree murder. FOX 21 typically does not release suspects’ names until they are formally charged.

As of 12:15 p.m., the police did not yet know whether the victim and the suspect knew each other.

The weapon used is being investigated.

The victim’s condition was last reported by authorities as unknown.
